ON-LINE CHINESE LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST

  (New Version Pilot Site)

  Guidelines

  • This is a placement level test. You will be assigned to the appropriate class level based on your score on the test.  In order to ensure accuracy of placement, please do not seek assistance in answering the questions posed below.  The test results are only useful to us if they accurately reflect your own level in the language.
  • Once you have been assigned to a class level, should the class instructors observe that your actual Mandarin proficiency exceeds or is insufficient to the level in which you have been placed, you will be asked to switch to a more appropriate level.
  • Should it be discovered that a student has intentionally attempted to test far below his or her actual proficiency level so as to place into an "easy" class, that student will be immediately dropped from the course.
  • The test takes approximately one hour to complete. Please make sure you have scheduled sufficient time to take the test in one sitting.
  • Before beginning the test, there is a page for you to select a test version (Traditional Chinese (Big5 encoding) or Simplified Chinese (GB encoding)).   Also, please make sure you can view the sample Chinese characters and can play the sample audio clip on the page, so that you won't run into problems while taking the test.
  • Once you have completed the placement test, you can view the test result on-line. The result will show the most suitable course placement your background.  Upon this placement, you may go ahead and sign up for the designated course level.  (Link to Chinese Course Descriptions)
  • Please note that results from the placement test will be used as an approximate placement guideline.  This, in conjunction with an oral interview and in-class performance, will determine your final placement.
  • IMPORTANT: Please review our FAQ before you continue. It contains useful advice that will help you complete the test successfully.
